Patrick Mahomes reflects on a life-changing 2020: ‘Bigger than football’

Patrick Mahomes became a Super Bowl champ this year and the owner of the richest contract in sports history. But for the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, his top moments of 2020 are “bigger than football.”

“To me, it had to be a tie with the engagement and the pregnancy,” Mahomes said Monday on KCSP 610 Sports Radio. “Those things are special, that you don’t get to happen a lot in your life.”

In early September, the 25-year-old NFL star got engaged to longtime girlfriend Brittany Matthews, 25. Later in the month, the couple announced they had a baby girl on the way.

“Being able to be a dad and being able to get married here soon, I’m truly thankful for that,” Mahomes said.

To kick off the year, Mahomes was named the Super Bowl MVP in February after Kansas City topped the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20. Over the summer, he and the Chiefs agreed to a 10-year, $503 million contract extension.

“I mean, the Super Bowl was awesome as well, but those things change your life, and it’s bigger than football,” he said Monday.

Although a return trip to the Super Bowl is high on Mahomes’ wish list for 2021, parenthood is his priority.

“Just to be the best father that I can possibly be,” the dad-to-be said.
