Leon Rose didn’t have to trade up after all.
The new Knicks president got his man, Obi Toppin, with the No. 8 pick in Wednesday’s 2020 NBA Draft.
Toppin, the 6-foot-9 forward who was born in Brooklyn, was the National Player of the Year in 2020 after a standout season at Dayton. He averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Flyers while vaulting into the spotlight and up draft boards.
The 22-year-old could contribute immediately to the Knicks, who didn’t have to trade up to get Toppin as he fell to them at No. 8. Many mock drafts had Toppin going to Cleveland at No. 5. The Cavaliers instead took Isaac Okoro.
