The Giants are in something of NFL draft limbo entering Week 17.
They can get as high as the No. 3-overall pick in the 2021 draft — that is highly unlikely, though. They are currently sitting at No. 8, certainly subject to change, as there are four teams, including the Giants, with matching 5-10 records. If the Giants win the NFC East at 6-10, they would become the first team in NFL history to start a season 0-5 and make the playoffs. It would also mean they have no lower than the No. 19-overall pick. So, there is a lot of draft maneuvering yet to come.
Getting up to No. 3 would take an improbable series of events in Week 17, starting with the Giants losing to the Cowboys. Next, they would need the Eagles, Lions, Falcons, Bengals and Texans to all win their games. That would push the Giants all the way up to No. 3.
If the Giants beat the Cowboys but Washington beats the Eagles later in the day, the Giants do not win the NFC East but they could see their draft spot get to No. 10. If the Giants win the division, they host a playoff game but drop to No. 19 in the draft. If we want to get crazy here, if the Giants win their wild-card playoff game, they could pick at No. 25.
Yes, crazy. Welcome to 2020 and the NFC East.
