Many airlines have been making life unnecessarily difficult for passengers trying to obtain refunds for flights they had to cancel due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
While the U.S. Department of Transportation warned airlines operating in the United States that they would have to appropriately accommodate consumers who had to cancel their flights, this has not been the experience for many people. A number of international airlines have only offered customers vouchers that are so constrained by regulations that they are practically impossible to redeem effectively.
Due to a large volume of complaints, the Department of Transportation has put pressure on such airlines to rectify the situation. This has resulted in a number of passengers receiving refunds for which they had previously been denied. However, there are still billions of dollars worth of plane tickets for which airlines have yet to issue proper compensation.
