Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich (R) on Monday sent a letter inviting Vice President Kamala Harris to tour the U.S. southern border.
Despite being tasked with addressing the border crisis on behalf of the Biden administration, Harris has yet to travel to the southern border to get a first-hand perspective of what Border Patrol agents are facing on a daily basis.
“… I formally invite you to join me for a tour of the southwest border in Arizona later this month. It will provide firsthand insight into what Arizonans, law enforcement officials, and migrants are experience,” Brnovich wrote. “I will make myself available any day of your choosing.”
“One area of particular concern is the growing problem of human trafficking. As a prosecutor, you were passionate about this issue and the victims being harmed. In 2012, you wrote, ‘The perpetrators of human trafficking have become more sophisticated and organized, requiring an equally sophisticated response from law enforcement and its partners to disrupt and dismantle their networks,’” the attorney general recalled. “Your words ring especially true today. Arizona and the federal government need a more sophisticated and aggressive approach to address this crisis and tragedy.”
Brnovich explained that Mexican drug cartels are responsible for a number of illegal activity taking place across the U.S.-Mexico border, including human trafficking.
“Every day, while the cartels are making millions of dollars, migrants are being abused physically and financially. Many families cannot afford to pay thousands of dollars to send their children illegally to America, so they become indebted to the cartels and are forced into years of indentured servitude or trafficking until their debts are paid off,” he explained. “We must do everything we can to put a stop to this.”
Though Border Patrol agents and law enforcement agencies along the southern border have apprehended a record number of illegal aliens and drugs, there are far more who successfully make their way into the United States. A bigger concern, according to Brnovich, is the number of “dangerous criminals” that are flocking to the border.
“Many of the dangerous individuals apprehended at our border, who have already received final deportation orders, are not being lawfully removed,” he explained, citing more than 300 instances that have taken place in Arizona.
The attorney general slammed the Biden administration’s reinstated “catch-and-release” policy that allows illegal aliens to be set free into the interior of the United States. It is a policy that has resulted in illegal aliens on the terror watch list being released into the country.
The growing crisis at the United States border has resulted in a record number of apprehensions. Border Patrol and DHS facilities have had to roll back COVID-19 restrictions in order to house the unprecedented number of unaccompanied minors that have crossed the border.
