7-year-old girl dies after Bronx apartment fire


A 7-year-old girl was killed and a woman critically injured in a Bronx apartment fire Monday morning, authorities said.

The blaze broke out on the fifth floor of the 15-story building on East 153rd Street near Morris Avenue in the Melrose neighborhood around 9:30 a.m., according to the FDNY.

The young girl was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center, where she died of smoke inhalation, and a 37-year-old woman was taken to the same hospital, where she is listed in critical condition, cops said.

Their relationship was not immediately clear.

Two firefighters were also evaluated on scene for minor injuries, the FDNY said.

The fire was under control by around 10:15 a.m., and the cause is under investigation.
